Most News Channels Still Clip Manually." class="hs-featured-image" style="width:auto !important; max-width:50%; float:left; margin:0 15px 15px 0;">

I have sat in a lot of discovery calls with Indian TV news channel heads over the past two years.

One moment keeps repeating itself.

I ask how many clips their video editing team published yesterday. They give me a number, usually somewhere between 50 and 200. Then I ask how many hours of live broadcast their channel ran. They say 18 to 24.

There is a pause. Not because they are confused. Because they already know what the gap means and have not quite said it out loud yet.

58% of Indians get their news from YouTube. The Reuters Institute confirmed it in their 2026 Digital News Report. Not social media broadly. Not news apps. YouTube specifically.

That number did not surprise anyone I have shown it to. What surprised them was seeing it written down.

YouTube Is Not a Secondary Channel Anymore. It Stopped Being One a While Ago.

Here is something I noticed across 90 plus discovery conversations.

Every digital head I spoke to already knew YouTube mattered. They were not arguing about whether to invest in it. They were stuck on how, because the gap between knowing YouTube matters and actually scaling output on it is not a strategy problem. It is a pipeline problem.

The Indian news audience did not wait for broadcasters to figure this out. They moved to YouTube years ago. Regional language audiences especially. Marathi speakers looking for Maharashtra politics. Telugu speakers following AP assembly coverage. Tamil audiences tracking local governance stories. They are searching for this content on YouTube every single day.

And they are finding it, from whoever published fastest.

That is the part that does not show up in strategy decks. The audience is not choosing between your channel and a competitor based on journalism quality alone. They are choosing between your clip published 55 minutes after the live moment and someone else's clip published 8 minutes after the same moment.

What a Video Editing Team's Day Actually Looks Like

I want to be precise here because I think the outside view of this problem is often too abstract.

A video editor on a TV news channel's digital team opens a browser tab, pulls up the live stream or the overnight recording, and starts scrubbing. They are looking for moments worth clipping, a key statement, a debate, a breaking development. When they find one, they mark the in-point, mark the out-point, export the clip, write a title, write a description, add hashtags, and upload to YouTube.

That process takes roughly 9.7 minutes per clip.

Meanwhile, the live broadcast has produced another 9.7 minutes of content. And another. And another.

The video editor is not slow. They are running at full capacity. The issue is that the broadcast never pauses to let the queue clear.

In an 8-hour shift, a team of four video editors working efficiently will produce somewhere between 40 and 60 clips. That same broadcast produced 480 minutes of content.

Most Indian TV news channels are publishing between 50 and 500 clips a day. The range is wide because team sizes vary. But even at 500 clips, the upper end, achieved by channels with large dedicated digital teams, they are still clipping a fraction of what aired.

The rest disappears.

The Regional Language Gap Is the One Nobody Talks About

I want to stay on this point because I think it gets lost in conversations about YouTube strategy.

National English news channels have larger video editing teams. Larger budgets. Bigger digital operations. They are still leaving a significant portion of their broadcast unclipped, but they at least have the infrastructure to be competitive.

Regional language channels are in a much harder position.

A Marathi news channel with a team of three video editors, covering Maharashtra politics, crime, weather, agriculture, and local governance across 18 hours of daily broadcast, is making real-time decisions about what to sacrifice. Every clip they do not have time to produce is a choice they did not want to make.

And here is the thing about regional language YouTube. The competition is thinner. Search queries in Marathi or Telugu or Tamil are less saturated than Hindi or English news searches. A regional TV news channel that figures out how to increase clip output, even by 2x, has a genuine shot at dominating its language category on YouTube.

That opportunity is sitting there. The constraint is not editorial. The video editing team knows what to clip. The constraint is hours.

What the Pilot Data Showed

I will share what we saw in one of our regional news channel pilots.

We ran Decouple AI alongside a regional Marathi-language TV news channel's existing video editing team for a full broadcast day. Eight hours and seven minutes of continuous live coverage.

The video editing team published 73 clips.

Decouple AI identified 206 clips from the same broadcast.

Of the 73 clips the team published, Decouple AI had independently identified 30 of them exactly, same moment, same start point, same end point. Another 40 were close matches where the content was identical but one side cut slightly earlier or later.

The editorial judgment was aligned. The difference was volume and speed.

The 133 additional clips Decouple AI identified were not low-quality moments the team deliberately skipped. They were moments the team simply did not reach before the shift ended.

Those 133 clips are 133 missed search entry points. 133 missed subscriber notifications. 133 moments that could have been found by someone in Maharashtra searching for news that evening.

You can read the full methodology and findings in the regional news channel pilot report.(DOWNLOA CASE STUDY HERE).

The Honest Question

58% of Indians are looking for news on YouTube.

Your video editing team is doing everything they can within the constraints of a manual workflow. They are not the bottleneck. The pipeline is.

The question worth sitting with is not whether your channel needs to be on YouTube. You already know the answer to that.

The question is how much of your live broadcast is actually reaching the 58% of Indians who went looking for it, and how much disappeared the moment it aired.

What to Do Next

YouTube Out-Earned Every TV Network. Is Your News Channel Ready?

In 2025, YouTube's advertising revenue crossed $40.4 billion.

In 2025, YouTube's advertising revenue crossed $40.4 billion.

That single number exceeded the combined ad revenue of Disney, NBCUniversal, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Discovery. The four companies that have dominated broadcast advertising for decades.

Let that land for a moment.

The platform your TV news channel treats as a secondary distribution channel just out-earned every major television network on the planet.

And most TV news channels are still publishing between 50 and 500 clips a day on it. With video editors working manually. One clip at a time.

The Shift That Already Happened

YouTube is now the number one streaming platform in the United States by watch time, a position it has held for nearly three years according to Nielsen data. More than 200 million Americans watch YouTube on connected TV screens every month. For a TV news channel, this is not a distribution footnote. It is where your audience goes the moment your live broadcast ends, looking for the clip of the moment they just watched or heard about.

In India, the numbers are equally stark. According to the Reuters Institute's 2026 Digital News Report, 58% of Indians rely on YouTube for news. Not social media broadly. YouTube specifically.

The audience is already there. The question is whether your TV news channel's publishing infrastructure is ready to serve it.

The Gap Most TV News Channels Are Sitting In

Here is the operational reality for most TV news channels in 2026.

A live broadcast runs 18 to 24 hours a day. Video editors watch the stream, identify clip-worthy moments, manually scrub to the right timestamp, set mark-in and mark-out points, export the clip, write the title and description, add hashtags, and publish to YouTube.

For Indian TV news channels, this produces somewhere between 50 and 500 clips per day depending on the size of the video editing team and editorial capacity.

For US TV news channels, the range is 20 to 100 clips per day.

Every clip that does not get produced is a missed search window. A missed trending query. A missed subscriber. Revenue that does not roll over to tomorrow.

The broadcast is happening. The moments are there. The audience is waiting on YouTube.

The bottleneck is the pipeline between the live stream and the published clip.

Want to see what this gap looks like with real pilot data from a national broadcaster? [Download the case study: CASE STUDY]

Why This Is a Structural Problem, Not a Headcount Problem

The instinct when you see this gap is to hire more video editors.

That instinct is wrong. Not because video editors are not valuable, but because the bottleneck is not judgment. It is the mechanical process that happens before judgment can be applied.

Before a video editor can decide whether a clip is worth publishing, someone has to watch the footage, identify the moment, set the boundaries, export the file, and prepare the metadata. In a manual workflow, that process takes approximately 9.7 minutes per clip.

At 9.7 minutes per clip, a single video editor can produce roughly 6 clips per hour at maximum output. Meanwhile the live broadcast does not pause. It does not wait for the queue to clear. It keeps producing content every single minute, adding to the backlog faster than any video editor working manually can process it.

Adding more video editors slows the bleed. It does not stop it.

What the TV News Channels Winning on YouTube Are Doing Differently

The TV news channels gaining ground on YouTube in 2026 are not necessarily the ones with the biggest video editing teams. They are the ones publishing the most content, the fastest, across the broadest range of topics and search queries.

YouTube's algorithm rewards three things that a manual clipping workflow structurally cannot deliver at scale. Publishing frequency — which for a TV news channel means clipping and publishing from a live stream that runs 18 to 24 hours without pause. Coverage breadth — which means capturing every significant moment across politics, crime, business, weather, and breaking news, not just the moments a video editor got to before the shift ended. And time-to-publish on trending topics — which means reaching YouTube while the audience is still actively searching, not an hour after the moment has already been covered by a faster competitor.

Every additional clip published creates another search entry point. Another opportunity for the algorithm to serve your content to someone looking for what happened in the news today. Another subscriber notification. Another watch-time increment that improves your channel's authority and recommendation placement.

This is not a content quality argument. It is a pipeline infrastructure argument. Quality content produced by a skilled TV news video editor that arrives 59 minutes after the moment has already lost the search window to a faster competitor.

The Question Worth Asking

If your TV news channel is currently publishing 100 clips a day with your video editing team, what would 300 clips a day change?

Not hypothetically. Concretely.

More search queries covered. More trending topics captured before they peak. More subscriber notifications sent in the window when audience interest is highest. More cumulative watch time driving algorithmic placement.

The broadcast is already happening. Your video editors are already working. The moments are already there on the live stream, running every hour of every day.

The only decision is whether those moments reach YouTube — or disappear the moment they air.
